Raise your hand if you love the waterfalls in North Carolina! This is Quarry Falls and in the summer it’s a hot spot for those who are brave enough to slide down the falls and into the rushing river. This set of falls is so easy to visit, and the good news for families who have a caravan of children is this: they are free. There are at least four sets of falls located on Highway 64 that run from Highlands to Franklin, North Carolina.

Dry Falls, in the photo above, is called “dry” because you can follow the trail and walk behind it. This was the falls featured years ago in the movie Last of the Mohicans. This past summer Dry Falls was closed so the pathway could be renovated. I pulled into the parking lot, got out, and walked a short distance to the new observation deck and took this photo. The path to the falls is now paved and perfect for wheel chairs. This area is among my favorite for a Sunday afternoon “get away.”
