Even though Ocracoke Island is a part of the Cape Hatteras Seashore, the only way you can get to the island is by airplane or ferry. The latter of the two is a lot of fun, and it’s also a relaxing way to become familiar with the waters off Hatteras.

The ferry runs every half hour from May to October and takes about 40 minutes. I left Hatteras for Ocracoke Island later in the day and got to enjoy a breathtaking sunset.

The island was home to the pirate Blackbeard and when you visit Cape Hatteras you certainly understand why. The waters are treacherous and there are lots of places to hide out with a “Pirate” ship.

The water becomes really choppy as you cross the sound. I only had a couple of full days on the Outer Banks and know that I’ll be going back. I’ll have to find a way to photograph the Ocracoke lighthouse.
