Spring Clouds!

Filed under: Living in Stephens County

This morning I spotted this Pear Tree (and the clouds behind it) on the way into the office. I couldn’t resist switching into four-wheel drive and driving part way up the hill to take this photo!

I Can Deal With—

Filed under: The Company of Friends

I can deal with the memory of this or . . .

I can deal with this and build a new memory. Think I’ll choose the second one!

Freckles

Filed under: Living in Stephens County

Freckles is the neighborhood kitty. She just drops in from time-to-time and frightens the heck out of me when I’m in the yard working. Or she hides behind the bushes at the end of the house and jumps out and scares Chippy half to death! Freckles is the sweet kitty that, so far, has survived living in this vast wilderness where Coyotes, wolves, skunks, and fox roam free. And where everyone reads at least one chapter of Jack London’s Call of The Wild before turning off their lights at night. Yikes! Now, I have frightened myself, again.

Something Old But Something New

Something old but something newly uncovered. Last year we thinned out some of the woods in an area that has not seen sunlight for a very long time. This spring these Daffodils started coming up. This one is called Sound and was bred in Holland by Karel van der Veek. The Web says, “It is a daffodil that really shows off, a floriferous beauty with pure white petals and a ruffled yellow cup that takes on variable shades of orange at the rim. It is lightly fragrant, and great for cheering up your spring garden or brightening an entire hillside.” The area we cleared out has been a place of welcome to visitors for well over 100 years. I doubt that anyone actually planted these flowers because they are in a wooded area. So, we’ll just say that they are “naturalized!”

Bleached Beach

Filed under: Fall and Winter in the Mountains, Hiking Through Northeast Georgia

I’m still trying to decide if I like this photo or not. But my goal is to post every day. So, I may not fully “love” everything that I put on this site. A student worker with me thinks it is fun, and that is really all that counts at this point. What is life all about if you can’t have some fun.

This shot is of a natural beach on the Chattooga River. There’s easy access to one of the larger rapids (Bull Sluice) and also to this area. Just check the map. You want to take 441 north to Rabun County and turn right on to Warwoman Road. Stay on this road until it crosses the river. There is a large parking area (on the left) overlooking a short trail where people put in and pull out canoes and kayaks.

This is a beautiful area and dogs are welcome but the trail is short. Because of the the terrain (lots of large rocks), Cocoa gives this hike two and a half dog paws.
