Christmas at Traveler’s Rest

After Christmas, I know I’ll find my way up into the mountains with the camera. But for now, I’m content to travel to a few places in this area. These photos were taken at Traveler’s Rest, an old stage coach inn built in 1833 located near the South Carolina line. The dogs loved this place and their excitement made me wonder what other creatures were hiding out in the nearby woods!

As I took this photo I couldn’t help but wonder how many travelers had passed through these doors. Cocoa couldn’t stay off the porch. She went to every door thinking that surely someone was inside waiting to meet and greet her. Due to the economy, the inn is only open the first weekend of every month. It sits on the Unicoi Turnpike—the old Indian footpath through northeast Georgia. If you love history, you will find this place fascinating.

Grabbed a cup of coffee, a camera, and the dogs and drove up to the Old Sautee Store this afternoon where I took these photos and recalled what it was like to visit this place when I was a child. It was a good memory for a gray but very cozy afternoon.

Little ducks lined the windows and a huge Coca-Cola sign hung outside.

Garland

We spent most of the weekend putting up Christmas decorations and lights. The newly planted fir trees on the hill behind the cottage were also decorated with garland. They were beautiful last night in the moonlight.

Cocoa2

Cocoa loves the sun room. She watches the birds that land just outside the windows and also keeps an eye on passing stray cats, and neighbors, who get up early and carry arm-loads of split wood into their houses.

Tonight we are lighting Christmas trees on campus! There are “open” dorms, too! Chipley couldn’t wait to try on his “hoodie” just in case he gets to go. Hoodies are a big deal on campus along with flip-flops. (Hoodies, jeans, and flip-flops even in the winter!)

Another photo of Mr. Chip, who is beginning to need a haircut!
